The monks from the German monastery Weihenstephan in Freising did not always brew beer. But nearly always. In 725, St. Korbinian together with 12 associates founded a ein Benedictine abbey on the mountain, Nährberg, and with it the regional art of brewing. The first hop mentioned in historic documents comes from the year 768, and probably ended up in one of the first Weihenstephaner beers. But officially the monastery started brewing beer in 1040, when abbot, Arnold, wrangled the brewing and selling right off the town, Freising.
Neither wars, fires, plagues and epidemics nor the secularisation, that dissolved the monastery, could stop the brewery. It just switched to a secular management under the royal estate of Schleißheim. Around the 'fin de siècle' the brewing academy, later universtiy, was built and took Weihenstephan far until the brewery reached world fame. In 1921, the brewery finally receives its title: Bayerische Staatsbrauerei Weihenstephan, in English 'Bavarian State Brewery Weihenstephan'.
The estate's ancient and unique history makes the 'Bayerische Staatsbrauerei Weihenstephan' the world's oldest brewery and at the same time one of the most modern ones.
