The Bodegas Franco-Españolas is located on the banks of the Ebro in Logroño, the current capital of the Rioja province. Over its 125 years of existence, the winery attracted some famous figures such as Hemingway and King Alfonso XIII.
The origin of Bodegas lies in the events unfolding at the end of the 19th century in France and Europe. Indeed, French vineyards were facing unprecedented difficulties due to the phylloxera plague whereas winegrowers from the Rioja were experiencing their golden age with the emergence of the "fine Rioja wines".
This explains why, in 1890, Fréderic Anglade Saurat, of the Bordeaux firm Anglade, arrived in Spain looking for new vineyards and organized a merger between France and Spain, hence the name Bodegas Franco-Españolas which literally translates to "Franco-Spanish wine cellars".
In 1983, the Eguizábal family took the winery leadership and breathed new life into its activities, developing wine tourism and cultural events.
