Arthur Guinness II got inspired to the Guinness Foreign Extra Stout in 1801. He tried this recipe for the elaboration of the West India Port by Guinness which he planned on selling to the whole world. For the beer needed to maintain its position at sea voyages of 4 to 5 weeks, he just added more hops to the recipe. That resulted in a powerful ale with a strong variety of aromas. And in time, the former West Porter India became the internationally beloved Foreign Extra Stout - a composition of tradition and innovation.
