Chenin wines
Chenin, also known as Chenin Blanc, Pineau d'Anjou, Pineau de la Loire, Pineau Vert, Pinot Blanco, Rousselin, Steen and Tite de Crabe, is a white grape originally from Anjou, Loire Valley, which is over a thousand years old. It is cultivated today in France, Argentina, Australia, Chile, the United States (California), New Zealand and South Africa, among other countries. In Spain it is part of the Alella and Somontano DOs, and is cultivated in Aragon and Catalonia.
It is used for obtaining dry, semi-dry and slightly sweet wines, but also to produce wines with fruit flavors and good acidity. Along with Chardonnay, it is the basis of champagne. If harvested late, it can be used for the production of liquourous wines. As a varietal wine, it should be drunk young, and it has a slight yellow-greenish color, with complex aromas of pineapple, hazelnut, apricot, peach, mango and honey, among others, as well as similar flavors, with a well-balanced acidity.
